Explaining a Programme That Could Not Simply Be Filmed

Reading Rocket is a computer-based bilingual reading and literacy programme designed for learners from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

The programme combines baseline reading assessments, interactive lessons, voice prompts and progress tracking to help learners improve reading speed, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and word recognition.

Stimulus Maksima needed a short marketing film that could communicate this value without relying on a lengthy explanation of the software.

The film needed to help parents, educators, school management teams, governing bodies and other decision-makers understand the difficulty experienced by a child who struggles to read, the support offered by Reading Rocket, and the confidence and opportunity that become possible as reading skills improve.

What the Client Needed

The brief was to create a story of approximately 30 to 60 seconds.

It needed to begin with the frustration and uncertainty that can accompany reading difficulties, while ending with a clear sense of progress and empowerment.

The client wanted the film to feel hopeful and enjoyable for children, without losing the practical message behind the programme. Reading Rocket is not only a learning platform; it also gives parents and educators a way to measure a learner's starting point and monitor improvement over time.

Our challenge was to communicate both the emotional story and the practical value of the programme in less than a minute.

Building the Story Around the Reading Rocket Name

The client supplied one existing illustrated image representing the visual style they were using at the time.

We used this as the starting point for the film's creative direction and developed a space-themed story around the Reading Rocket name.

Children became young astronauts. Reading became their launchpad. Books, planets, rockets and space imagery represented the wider possibilities that open when a learner develops stronger reading skills.

Rather than trying to list every feature of the programme, the film focused on one clear idea: improved reading gives a child greater confidence, independence and opportunity.

A text-led format kept the message concise, while the animated scenes made the educational subject feel accessible and memorable. The completed film was produced in both English and Afrikaans. Creating the Afrikaans version involved more than translating the wording: all on-screen text had to be replaced, while some animation and timing also had to be adjusted to accommodate the new copy naturally.

Where AI Fitted Into the Production

AI-assisted tools supported the visual development and animation process, but they were only one part of the production.

The concept, story structure, interpretation of the client's brief, visual selection, pacing, text, editing and quality control still required human creative direction.

Creating individual images was not the main challenge. The real work involved maintaining consistent characters, developing a coherent visual world and making sure each scene contributed to the story.

As an early project within this developing workflow, the film required experimentation, testing and refinement. It also gave us valuable practical experience in understanding where AI-assisted tools can improve production and where traditional editing and creative judgement remain essential.

Extending the Visual World Beyond the Film

Following the animation, Stimulus Maksima asked us to recreate the Reading Rocket visual concept as a high-resolution standalone image.

The artwork featured a diverse group of young "reading astronauts" surrounded by colourful books and educational imagery. It was created for use in large-format banner designs at the client's expos.

This gave the client a strong campaign asset that could support their physical marketing presence while remaining visually connected to the animated film. The client loved the completed artwork, and the Reading Rocket visual world gained a useful life beyond the original video.

The Outcome

The completed film gave Stimulus Maksima a short, visually engaging way to introduce Reading Rocket and explain its purpose to education and stakeholder audiences.

The later expo artwork strengthened the project by turning the animation's central visual concept into a reusable marketing asset.

It also demonstrated how AI-assisted animation can help communicate a programme, service or idea that cannot easily be captured through traditional filming. The technology made new visual possibilities available, while the final quality still depended on a clear concept, careful editing, client collaboration and human creative direction.

Need to Explain a Service or Programme That Is Difficult to Film?

Animation can be particularly effective when your organisation needs to explain software, an educational programme, an internal process or an idea that does not have an obvious physical product to film.

Unbreakable Media provides concept development, animated marketing videos, motion graphics and AI-assisted visual production for South African organisations.

If you have an idea that needs a clear visual story, we would be happy to discuss the most practical way to produce it. Let's start the conversation.
